The article examines the impact of the atmospheric boundary layer, which is located directly at the earth’s surface, on a horizontal path of the optical signal. It is known that the trajectory of the optical signal is influenced by the physical properties of the surface and its geometric shape. In the real atmosphere, there are complex spatial - temporal changes in the refractive index of the atmosphere, which can be quantitatively described by the vertical and the horizontal gradient of the refractive index of the atmosphere. The main feature of this study is the inclusion of only the horizontal gradient of the refractive index of the atmosphere and the layer-division of the atmosphere, and these layers are arranged perpendicular to the earth’s surface. New mathematical expressions for calculating the deviation of the trajectory of the optical signal and the angle of refraction of the atmosphere upon passing through the atmospheric boundary layer in the horizontal direction are received and theoretically justified. It is proposed to take into account the actual value of the horizontal gradient of the refractive index for the calculation of the possible deviations of the optical signal path from a straight line.
